Finally watched the Mario movie (it got a delayed release over here) and… I’m happy to say I found it genuinely entertaining!

I thought it was good-natured, lighthearted fun wrapped up in sumptuously colourful visuals. It’s obviously not especially deep, but it does achieve the goal of being broadly ‘likeable’ which I feel is a commendable feat.

I was somewhat apprehensive before entering the cinema as the last video game movie adaption I’d watched was Sonic 2, which I thought was — to be frank — absolutely bloody awful. I was hoping it would be at least mediocre but found it to be just… gratingly bad from start to finish.

Much like the Mario movie, Sonic 2 didn’t go down all that well with the critics, but was a commercial success nonetheless. After struggling to the end of it, I found myself siding with the critics. The best thing that can be said about that film is I got to watch it for free on an aeroplane.

Thankfully the Mario movie didn’t leave nearly such a sour taste in my mouth, and I’m genuinely glad I watched it.

I've gave it a watch and it's fine, could be a lot worse and it could be a lot better. With a film like this you want it to be so charming that you fall in love with it rather than falling in like with it to cover up for the short comings which I don't think it did, it came close though so I’m happy it exists.

Personally I would have preferred it if they just skipped this being an origin story if they aren't gonna aim for something other than bog standard. The incel Bowser take was jokes. Lots of easter eggs which was very nice. Jokes varied from fun cheese to lame cringe. Animation was nice, a few good set pieces and the art style is functional (I generally prefer it when it's not just nice textures and it's a real style though) with a few ooh moments. Voice acting was okay, they did start to grate on me towards the end so aside from Jack Black and Charlie Day it wouldn’t be a loss if everyone was recast for the series of straight to DVD sequels.

Music was the standout of the movie! I might get a copy of the soundtrack. Bowser playing the piano with Kamek was a favourite of mine, possibly of the movie too. They still managed to fall in that trap of using pop music for no reason other than to get a cheap pop like Shrek with that sodding Smash Mouth song although their picks aren’t nearly that bad however if you're gonna use licence music why did they not use Mamma Mia!?!?!?!?

It sorta reminds me of Raiders Of The Last Ark or The Batman where the main characters isn't needed at all and it all would have worked out the same in the end.

Also as everyone hasn’t shut up about the meaningless scores which they need to validate their own experiences I think the critics are right in that it's mid so it got mid reviews. To me the problem is gamers being gamers they can't reconcile something they like not getting a 10/10 because they think everything below that is the utmost garbage. Or maybe we need a new scoring matrix as so many movies which are watched nowadays isn't because they are movies but a brand management exercise therefore it's based on being fan pleasing-ness instead? I give the film 1/10 due to how I resent it for making me take time away from Zelda, I saw a Minion before I saw a Mario, someone in the cinema coughed, my banana and rum milkshake and popcorn was nice but it was £17.45 which I blame the movie for plus it's too political with the rainbows as well as Luigi and Bowser never kissing in it!!!

I know it doesn't mean much because of inflation but:

@FishyS so close!

I don't think we need to worry about a Zelda movie now, with TotK it seems Nintendo is aiming Zelda at a more older (kid) crowd than a younger (kid) crowd.

Heck they might get Dreamworks to do it since they are owned by Universal and Nintendo is very close to them right now with not just the Mario movie but also the parks.

@Owl1 Oh my gosh dreamworks doing a Zelda? I would be so happy! Now on my dreams I would want studio gilbi to do a movie, buuuut I don’t think that would happen.

@Owl1 lol! That short was name bait, it was like two seconds. I would love to see a full animation from them.

@Snatcher they got a new movie coming out this year from what I know. We'll probably get it next year (I don't really know how dubbing works).

Mario movie is coming to Peacock August 3rd. Tagging @NintendoLife as this is newsworthy.

For those who have Peacock, it's coming in about a month!

Edit: Instagram embed seems to not be showing. I'd link Twitter, but it's asking me to sign up, so this is the best I could do for providing a source.
Link to Peacock's post about the Mario movie on Instagram

Edit 2: Guess a link will do then.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally on Peacock, right now. Watched it again with mom. Also, mom noticed a little detail in the breakfast scene with Mario's family, a Sicilian-styled coffee maker. Which is nice since my mother's side of the family is part Italian, she also remembers the family dinners similar to what Mario's family did at the beginning of the movie.

It was fun revisiting the movie, and got to show it to mom.
