Sinister Fishing Adventure 'Dredge' Receives Second Free Update On Switch

It was a cool, intriguing game, massively let down by its ending for me. And now I see no point in ever playing it again. It's such a shame.

@RainbowGazelle this is the only reason I'm holding off buying it. I love anything to do with sea exploration but my boss told me the ending ruins an otherwise perfect game.

Also, they didn't mention that the new character is there for photo mode. It's not unlocked straight away and you need to find something and return it to her to unlock it.

I will get the physical at some point as loved the look and feel of this.

Weird to see some people here being disappointed by the game, especially the story.
For an indie game it had a rather engaging and simple story to tell and told it well. If you have any knowledge of cosmic horror you could have seen everything coming, but it didn't diminish it for me knowing the tropes. More importantly, the gameplay was fun and varied, building on mechanics till the end. It didn't outstay its welcome, think it took me about 10 hours to 100% the game.

@Specters agreed 100%. one of my favourite games this year. The mystery, setting and creepy atmosphere of it all is top notch. Even if I was let down by the endings (I wasn't) I don't think I'd care much given how everything up till that point is an absolute delight.

@RainbowGazelle honestly just curious, but what was your problem with the ending?

I think the ending was quite clear and built up well. I can see how it would suffuse a layer of melancholy over the game, make it difficult to return to, but I think it elevates the experience.

Loved this game, waiting until after the paid DLC comes out to replay it.

@EvrgrnCmln Kinda the lack of one. There is the good twist where we discover who the main character is. But we don't know exactly how his wife died. And there's no way to actually save her. And after slowly piecing together what's been causing the mutated fish and weird phenomena, the game just ends with either you trying to resurrect your wife and the world ending, or you throwing the book back, and dying anyway. What was the point in any of the game? It's all so bitterly sad and pointless. You die anyway. Nothing made any difference. And there's no replayability. Once you know what happens, there's really no point in playing again. So for me, it just left a bitter taste, and I don't see much point in returning to it. Which is a shame, because spooky mysteries and deep sea horrors? Awesome. Totally my thing.

@RainbowGazelle I get that. I guess I didn't mind as much because that's what I was expecting from the game - it billed itself as cosmic horror, and that's the essence of cosmic horror: there is an inherent and essential malevolence underpinning reality, and it renders all of our triumphs and struggles meaningless, to the point that merely glimpsing it causes people to go mad. You can't fight it or overcome it because it's woven into the fabric of the universe.

Loved everything about this game, and I don't know what people disappointed by the ending had hoped for? It had two endings, I liked both, and it made a lot more sense how it actually ended than it would have if some small boat sailor who had been killing ocean life small and large throughout the game with no sign of remorse won in an epic boss fight from an Eldritch horror or just a VERY big oceanic life form that kills without remorse any human stupid enough to come sail and disturb the oceans. Cosmic horror is the kind of horror that is frightening because it is to us what we are to musquitos or bacteria: a ruthless mass killer that isn't even aware it does anything other than squash a minor annoyance, if it is even aware of the fact that it squashes it or entire civilisations of it.

Not only is this game fantastic and am I glad to have a reason to revisit it now, it even had a very nice decent physical retail release with a small artbook to display some of the amazing art in the game such as the dog.

@RainbowGazelle I see it more like any one chapter of Eternal Darkness, just without the final one. I mean the FINAL final one, after beating it in every allignment. Humans can't face off against cosmic horrors, and that's the point of cosmic horror. To me, a cosmic horror that is explained, defeated, or gladly serves a little human spec in resurrecting this little human spec's little human spec wife, is no longer a cosmic horror.

But I too do understand that some people like a more hopeful ending to their games, I just love how either the cosmic horror summoned destroys the earth, or the oceanic life you killed without remorse throughout the game, suddenly remorselessly and without further justification gets back at you.

@Shambo Yooooo….. I never knew there was another ending for finishing Eternal Darkness on all 3 alignments?!? Ugh…. They seriously need to port/remaster that game, and pronto!

@Dm9982 Yeah, that's one of the all-time highs for the horror genre, and it is stuck on a system that sold so little but aged so well (and was great even in its own time), it now costs an arm and a leg to buy a few of the good games for it. Glad I still have many of my original games for it, and bought a collection at dumping price as a present both to myself and my younger sister (who got the Gamecube and the doubles that we used to play a ton of back in the day) when the prices were low anyway, just before they skyrocketed, so selling a few doubles my sister wasn't interested in made me back my entire investment in it.

Eternal Darkness and the highly underrated game of John Carpenter's The Thing truly need a remake or remaster at least. Gamecube / PS2 era horror did many things right they seem to have forgotten about now. I can still hear many quotes from those games when I think back.

The most obvious one: "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there. Wondering, fearing, doubting...", every time the game was booted up. Which happened a lot, I'm quite sure that over the years I finished the game at least twenty times, much like RE4 and such.

Just watched the "true" ending on youtube, and I even still knew the words of that scene.

@Bunkerneath you'll be happy to know then, that the physical (in Europe at least, not sure about other regions) comes with a small art book. I know I love these kinds of things, it makes the game a great experience beyond just playing it.

@Shambo I still have a few of my GameCube games, just no cube to play em on. I kept PSO Ep 1&2, Eternal Darkness, and MGS Twin Snakes. Sold the cube to get Wii, then later forgot I had my cube games still and sold the Wii for Wii U. Oddly enough I only regret trading Wii and Wii U in for VC content and backwards compatibility. Oh and Twilight + Wind Waker remasters being stuck on Wii U still….

I, like many others I’m sure, banked on the rumor of GC VC or GC coming to NSO+…. Baaaaah.

Nintendo, I know you have to scan the websites and comments, for the love of god, bring those games forward to Switch!
