After being teased back in March, THQ Nordic has today confirmed that Gothic Classic will be heading to Switch on 28th September, bringing the classic ARPG into the handheld realm for the first time.
Originally released on PC in 2001, Gothic Classic will see you heading into the fantasy kingdom of Myrtana, where disparate colonies fight against armies of Orcs to regain their freedom. Thrown into the dangerous prison mines, you will have to form alliances and avoid gruesome beasts on your quest to survive and escape to the world above.
From original developer Piranha Bytes, Gothic Classic is a direct port of the original PC game, Gothic 1. There has been no remastering or remaking for this edition (not to be confused with the upcoming Gothic 1 Remake for PS5), but various fixes have been applied to the game's original code alongside a native gamepad UI and new controls — you can find all of the listed fixes and updates here.
For a little more information about what the Gothic Classic has in store, check out the following from publishers THQ Nordic:
- A big RPG experience with over 50 hours of gameplay
- A large variety of weapons and spells for your character
- A unique character development systems that is tied to teachers that can be found in the world
- A simulated living world where people go to work, sleep, eat and fight to survive
- Make a choice between 3 different camps that all have their unique perspectives on the main story
A physical edition of Gothic Classic will be exclusively available from the THQ Nordic store for €29.99.

Seen better PS2 graphics than this, no thanks.
Ah they have made a direct port of the 2001 game as the remaster will not work on the Switch so silly people will buy this by mistake.
THQ Nordic hope you get dumped on for this tactic.
One of the best RPGs of all time. In Germany, Switzerland and Austria it is an absolute classic. Gothic 2 is even a little bit better, but this one is a must play game. Looking forward to it, I hope they get the controls right.
The running animation looks.... odd....
Was getting Skyrim vibes but then it vanished, will stick with Skyrim
If I find the time to play it, I will. It is pretty good.
One of the best 'Eurojank' RPGs ever made. Gothic is simply legendary and was overshadowed by Morrowind's marketing which is a true shame.
We are born of the eurojank, made men by the eurojank, undone by the eurojank.
@aznable Praise be eurojank!
One of the first games I played that I still remember. I was so bad at games back then it took me forever to progress 😵💫
I remember playing the demo's of some of the Gothic games on PC back in the good ole days. Didn't this outfit also make Two Worlds? Something special about these Eurojank rpg's. Looking forward to this.
@Bunkerneath Remasters are overrated. Being able to play classic games on the Switch, as they actually were, is the best way to play.
First I hear of the term Eurojank, but apparently I am a lover of such games.
Time to head back to Mount and Blade. See you later!
I've never played Gothic but for some reason I have learned of its premise and jankiness on the web. It must have been some kind of retrospective. I'm glad to see this coming to Switch, though I really don't need another game to spend on this year!
One of the best games ever made in that time.
Everyone played back then..
Gothic **was** an absolutely mind-blowingly great game, BUT...it is 20 years old now. All the good ideas have been taken by other games, and some of the "meh" ideas (like combat in Gothic) haven't been utilized again.
Without a remaster & update of some kind, I can see this falling flat, which would be a pity, as Gothic 3 absolutely deserves a remaster.
EDIT: 29 Euros? Are they out of their minds? The game is great, if they priced it at 15 or so, I think people would be able to overlook the PS2 graphics and give it a try, and actually enjoy it.
EDIT EDIT: Wow, so the PS5 is getting the remaster? Well, maybe I will buy one...
German humor at its finest. Praise the Schläfer!
@raffivegas Two Worlds was a different developer (Reality Pump), but Pyranha Bytes made the Risen series and now currently the Elex series. The first Risen game was released on Switch not too long ago.
All amazing(?) Eurojank regardless.
@Bunkerneath Gothic is one of the best rpg, this port doesn't look good but after playing the gothic remake demo on steam I think this one will be a better choice.
Awesome I love it when classic PC games get ported to the Switch. Loved playing Kotor on the Switch and this looks like another great one.
The trailer says “improved graphics”, but the story states “no remastering”. Which one is true?
@XenoShaun ah, gotcha, thanks for the clarification. Risen! Didn't know it was on the Switch
I never play on PC, except for Gothic 2+3 which I still love and visit every couple years. Never played the predecessor properly because of bugs, so I'll be all over this^^
Text in the news “there has been NO remastering for this release!”
Trailer above at 1’29” “IMPROVED GRAPHICS, UI and tailor made controls”. Err, that’s exactly what a remaster is, guys and gals at NL.
@Bunkerneath are you serious? Because if you are… to put it lightly, let’s say your take is way more silly than all of us people who might buy Gothic Classic.
Gothic 1 may not be a looker these days, but the game itself is one of the most unique ARPG experiences! I highly recommend this if you can handle some old graphics and clunky controls. The figting is a bit janky as well, but once you get used to how it works it's alright!
I will likely get both the remake and classic. Been a long time Gothic. Welcome back.
@Bunkerneath Some of us want to play the original. Remakes/remasters aren’t always the preferred route.
